My Studio on the Outskirts of Town

About three years ago, I started renting my current studio. I began searching for a workshop shortly before moving houses, looking for a place that met two main criteria: being able to make noise during the day without any issues, and being within a 30-minute commute by bicycle or car from home.

In my new workshop, I wanted to use a pneumatic engraver and a CNC mill, so finding a place where making noise wouldn’t be an issue was an absolute requirement. Air compressors in particular—even “silent” models—generate persistent noise and vibration. Setting up a fully soundproof room or investing in an extremely expensive ultra-quiet unit in a regular residential building was simply impractical. Rather than trying to soundproof a living space, I needed an environment where daytime workshop noise was inherently acceptable.

Although there are residences nearby, my current studio isn’t in a typical residential neighborhood. Instead, it’s in an area dominated by small factories and construction offices. Because of this, I can work during the daytime without worrying about making noise. While the location is far from refined or glamorous, having an environment where I can immerse myself in work without hesitation is truly ideal for me.

Looking back, many artist studios in cities like New York and London where I spent time were situated in similar industrial areas. The studio I used to rent in London was also inside a DIY-renovated factory or warehouse space. Over there, art organizations offer affordable studios in almost every city, creating an environment far more supportive of artists and designers than what is typically available in Japan.

On a side note, a ceiling pipe in that studio once burst, leaving me scrambling from midnight until morning to move stuff and drain water. The silver lining was that it was a freshwater pipe rather than a sewage line.

Regardless of the setting, I believe having a dedicated space to focus on crafting is the greatest happiness for a maker. While creating under constraints can be interesting at times, at this stage in my career, an environment like this is truly the best fit for me.

Furthermore, as I had been feeling a bit of “Urban fatigue” and wanted to step away from the urban bustle, this setup is very close to my ideal. If possible, I’d love to be in a place surrounded by even more nature, but since that isn’t feasible immediately, I hope to relocate to a workshop even closer to my ideal someday.
