The 3D Printer: A Talented New Assistant

This spring, we welcomed a new 3D printer into our studio.
I first encountered 3D printing about ten years ago, before I ever stepped into the world of jewelry. Back then, I used it mostly to make small everyday objects like pen holders or to experiment with pieces for art projects. Compared to today, the print quality was still quite rough. I remember thinking of it more as an interesting experiment than a tool for fine craftsmanship.
Over the years, as I devoted myself to jewelry making, 3D printing technology evolved tremendously. High-definition resins formulated specifically for jewelry casting became readily accessible—and with that, I decided it was time to bring one into our studio.

Since it arrived, my days have been filled with learning CAD software and running test prints. Things still don’t go according to plan every now and then, but by adjusting the settings step by step, it has smoothly integrated into our actual workflow.
Previously, our process meant hand-carving wax master models, casting and finishing them in silver, and then making rubber molds to replicate each piece. For designs with wide size ranges, such as rings, we used to carve two or three base models and resize each one, which took considerable time and patience.

Now, we can print master models tailored to each specific ring size and take them straight to casting. This opens up so much more freedom and speed in our making process. That said, it certainly doesn’t eliminate our hands-on work—carefully removing supports after printing, fine-tuning delicate details, and polishing each piece to perfection are still essential steps.
No matter how convenient technology becomes, we will never leave everything to a machine. The subtle nuances and warmth born only from human hands are at the very heart of what makes SWING JEWELRY special.

Balancing the advantages of modern technology with the warmth of handcrafted work, we look forward to continuing to create jewelry you will cherish for years to come.
