Putting Custom Stem Caps and Bar End Caps on a Hybrid Bike (Part 1)

長い間、物置の奥に眠っていた自転車を引っ張り出してきました。これはブリヂストンの「CHeRO｣（クエロ）」というクロスバイクで、以前調布に住んでいた頃、吉祥寺で借りていたスタジオへの通勤に使っていた思い出の1台です。

I pulled out a bike that had been sitting in the back of my storage room for ages. It’s a Bridgestone “CHeRO” hybrid bike—a ride full of memories that I used for commuting to the studio I rented in Kichijoji back when I lived in Chofu.

今回この自転車を出してきたのは、乗るためというよりも、一般的なクロスバイクにSWING JEWELRYのステムキャップとバーエンドキャップを取り付けたらどうなるか試してみたくなったからです。手頃な価格の自転車だからこそ、そこまでお金をかけずに自分らしくカスタマイズしてみようと思います。

I didn’t really dig it out to ride it, but more because I wanted to see how SWING JEWELRY’s stem cap and bar end caps would look on a standard hybrid bike. Since it’s an affordable bike, I figured I’d give it a nice personal touch without spending too much.

別の自転車を購入してからは一度も乗っていなかったため、タイヤの劣化や錆、埃が目立つ状態でした。まずは丁寧に洗車し、タイヤとチューブを新品に交換。錆はすべてを取り除くのが難しかったものの、可能な限り綺麗に磨き上げました。また、調子の悪かったディレイラー（変速機）も新しいものに付け替えています。

Since I hadn’t ridden it at all after getting another bike, the tires had worn out, and it was pretty dusty and rusty. First, I gave it a thorough wash and swapped in new tires and tubes. The rust was tough to get rid of completely, but I polished it up as best as I could. I also replaced the faulty derailleur with a fresh one.

チェーンも新調する予定です。せっかくなら少し変わった足回りにしたいと思い、ゴールドのチェーンを用意しました。

元々はステムキャップやバーエンドキャップを付けられない仕様だったため、グリップの交換やステムエクステンダーの追加によって、どちらも装着できるよう作業の合間に少しずつカスタムを進めています。

I’m planning to get a new chain too. I wanted to add a bit of flair to the drivetrain, so I picked up a gold chain.

Originally, it wasn’t designed to fit stem caps or bar end caps, so I’ve been working on it little by little between work—replacing the grips and adding a stem extender so I can mount both caps.

しかし、ここでひとつ大きな問題が発生し、現在は作業を一時中断しています。ステムエクステンダーとハンドルを連結するために「アヘッドステム」というパーツを追加する必要があるのですが、内径のサイズが合わず、規格がマニアックすぎるため市販のパーツが見つからない状態になってしまいました。

そこで、CNCでアルミを削り出してパーツを自作することにしました。すでにCADデータは作成済みですが、まとまった時間が取れず、まだ加工には着手できていません。

作業さえ再開できればあとは組み立てるだけなので、完成まではもうひと息です。続きは後編にて（途中で別の話題を挟むかもしれませんが、楽しみにお待ちください）。

But I ran into a major hitch here, so the project is currently on pause. I need an “ahead stem” to connect the stem extender to the handlebars, but the inner diameter didn’t fit, and because it’s such a niche spec, I couldn’t find any off-the-shelf parts.

So, I decided to custom-make the part myself by CNC machining aluminum. I’ve already prepped the CAD data, but I haven’t found a solid block of time to start machining yet.

Once I get back to it, all that’s left is assembly, so it’s almost done. To be continued in Part 2 (I might post about something else in the meantime, but stay tuned!).
